• Identifying the material the roof is thatched with, and therefore given position of roof, its life expectancy. Confirming the same on each slope.
• Identifying ridge type and material used to establish life expectancy.
• Understanding the nature and availability of the materials, particularly in the light of being obliged to follow a "like for like "policy.
• Estimating rate of deterioration and therefore longevity.
• Understanding the relevance of involvement of conservation in listed buildings, buildings in conservation areas and grant aided thatching.
• Noting areas of excessive wear.
• Estimating future known capital costs.
