- Identifying ridge type and material used to establish life expectancy.
- Understanding the nature and availability of the materials, particularly in the light of being obliged to follow a "like for like "policy.
- Estimating rate of deterioration and therefore longevity.
- Understanding the relevance of involvement of conservation in listed buildings, buildings in conservation areas and grant aided thatching.
- Noting areas of excessive wear.
- Estimating future known capital costs.
